IND vs SA, ODI 1: Kallis leads South African victory over India

Sachin Tendulkar's valiant 99-run knock went in vain as a rock-solid Jacques Kallis, a known India nemesis, led South Africa to a four-wicket win in the first of three one-day internationals. Kallis's well-paced innings saw South Africa overhaul an India total of 242 for eight built around a third wicket stand of 158 between Sachin Tendulkar (99) and Rahul Dravid (74).
Tendulkar was left just 50 runs away from becoming the first batsman in history to score 15,000 one-day international runs - a landmark he could reach during the remaining games of this series. However, in sight of what would have been his 42nd hundred at this level, the 34-year-old Tendulkar was run out, going for an ill-judged second, by cover sweeper Morne van Wyk's throw to wicket-keeper Mark Boucher.

Maninder Singh attempts suicide

Former cricketer Maninder Singh, who recently found himself embroiled in a drug abuse controversy, was admitted to a local hospital in the small hours of Saturday after he allegedly slashed his wrists in what is believed to be a suicide attempt.
The former left-arm spinner is stated to be out of danger after doctors at the Shanti Mukund Hospital in east Delhi operated upon him following his admission there in a critical condition. "Doctors have just told us that he is out of danger but he is still in the operation theatre and is not in a position to make a statement," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary said. Police received a call at around one a.M. Saying that the former cricketer was brought to the hospital in a critical condition with both his wrists slashed. According to police, his neighbour in Mausam Vihar locality of Preet Vihar had rushed him to the hospital.
Police, however, remained tightlipped on whether it was a suicide attempt or a case of accident as claimed by his friends and family. "We have not spoken to the doctors in detail about his injuries. We will be able to reach at any conclusion only after knowing the exact nature of his injury," he said.
Maninder landed in a controversy after he was caught with 1.5 grams of cocaine and arrested alongwith his friend and small-time cricketer Sayyam Siddique by the Narcotics Wing of the Delhi Police from near his residence while he was about to leave for the airport to catch a flight to Mumbai.
