India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in a pulsating final to deliver World Cup glory to their cricket-mad population for the first time since 1983. Sri Lanka smashed 91 from their last 10 overs to post 274-6 in Mumbai, with Mahela Jayawardene making a superb 103. India lost Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early on but Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Dhoni rebuilt the innings. The final in Mumbai on Saturday is the first time two Asian nations meet in a cricket World Cup final and it will see a straight contest between the world's best batsman and best bowler of all time - Sachin Tendulkar (18,093 ODI runs) versus Muttiah Muralitharan (534 ODI wickets). And also, in all probability, it will be the last World Cup for both. India booked a place against Sri Lanka in Saturday's World Cup final after beating Pakistan by 29 runs in Mohali. Virender Sehwag (38) took 21 off Gul from the third over of the innings and Sachin Tendulkar, reprieved by referral and dropped four times on 27, 45, 70 and 81, looked set for his 100th international century with one of his least convincing innings. England produced the most astonishing comeback of the World Cup to beat South Africa by six runs in Chennai. South Africa appeared to be coasting in reply at 124-3 but lost four wickets for three runs in five overs.

The bus carrying the West Indies players has been stoned on its way back to the team hotel after they thrashed Bangladesh by nine wickets in Mirpur. A Bangladesh police official said the fans had mistaken the West Indies bus for the Bangladesh bus. The West Indies had produced a thumping performance to beat Bangaldesh by 9 wickets in their World Cup Group B match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka earlier.Bangladesh were dismissed for 58, its lowest score in a World Cup. They were blown out inside 19 overs on a decent pitch to finish with the fourth lowest total in World Cup history. West Indies, led by Chris Gayle with 37 not out, took less than 13 overs to reach the winning target.

South Africa steamrolled the Netherlands by 231 runs in Thursday's World Cup match to top Group B at Mohali. South Africa rode the marathon 221-run third wicket stand between Hashim Amla (113) and AB de Villiers (134) and JP Duminy's (40) subsequent 15-ball cameo to post 351-5 after they were asked to bat first. AB de Villiers, who made 107 in their first match against West Indies, struck a 134 from 98 balls with 13 fours and four sixes - his 11th one-day century. South Africa then mowed down the Dutch top half by the time they reached the 100-mark.

A brilliant 158 from Andrew Strauss saw England tie an extraordinary World Cup group match against India in Bangalore. Strauss along with Ian Bell put England in command with a 170-run second-wicket stand, before Zaheer Khan dismissed both batsmen in successive balls. England needed 14 from the last over, but fell one run short of victory needing two off the final ball.Earlier, India scored a mammoth 338 with the help of Tendulkar's 120-run knock which came off 115 balls (5 sixes and 10 fours). India takes on Bangladesh in the 2011 World Cup opener on Saturday in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium with a chance to exact revenge for a shock loss in the previous edition four years ago which ensured India's early exit in the first round of the 2007 tournament in the Caribbean.
