Cricket News October November 2005
Ganguly named in India Test squadNov 23 2005
India have included former skipper Sourav Ganguly for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which starts in Madras (Chennai) on 2 December.
He was named in a 14-man squad just 24 hours after Rahul Dravid was confirmed as captain.
That decision ended Ganguly's five-year spell in charge of the Test team.
Uncapped wicket-keeper Mahendra Dhoni and seamer Rudra Pratap Singh have been included in the squad after impressing for the one-day side.
Dhoni replaces Dinesh Karthik after some astonishing batting performances, which included an innings of 183 not out against Sri Lanka in Jaipur.
But the main talking point will be the return of Ganguly, who was recently involved in a public spat with coach Greg Chappell. He has also been suffering from an elbow problem.
More made it clear they now see him as a "batting all-rounder" who can give "balance" to the team.
But that represents a gamble because although the 33-year-old has scored more than 5,000 Test runs, he has only taken 25 wickets in 84 appearances with his medium pace at a cost of 52 runs each.
Publicly, Ganguly has indicated he has no complaints about the decision to appoint Dravid, even though he is India's most successful skipper with 21 victories in 49 Tests.
Ganguly, meanwhile, has given up the captaincy of Bengal in order to concentrate on his batting in domestic cricket prior to the Test.
India Test squad: R Dravid (capt), V Sehwag, G Gambhir, S Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Y Singh, M Kaif, MS Dhoni (wkt), I Pathan, A Agarkar, H Singh, M Kartik, A Kumble, RP Singh.
Rain spoils Tendulkar's big dayNov 22 2005 Sachin Tendulkar 's world record 357th one-day international appearance for India was delayed when rain washed out Tuesday's game against South Africa.
The 32-year-old batsman was poised to surpass former Pakistan all-rounder Wasim Akram in Madras (Chennai).
But he will now have to wait until Friday's day-night match at Eden Gardens in Calcutta to do so.
South Africa won the opening match by five wickets, but India drew level with a six-wicket victory in Bangalore.
Saturday's defeat brought to an end a 20-game unbeaten run for the tourists, while India recovered the superb form they showed in thumping Sri Lanka 6-1 in their recent series.
 Dravid retained as India skipper
Nov 22, 2005 Rahul Dravid has been re-appointed as India's captain for three home Test matches against Sri Lanka next month.
He has led the team in five previous Tests, winning two and losing two with the other drawn.
But this will be his first Test series in charge since being appointed to replace Sourav Ganguly.
Dravid recently led India to a 6-1 win over Sri Lanka in one-day cricket and chief selector Kiran More said he deserved the opportunity to continue.
The first Test against Sri Lanka starts in Madras on 2 December, with the other games to be played at Delhi and Kanpur.
Sri Lanka have never won a Test on Indian soil, but all three games were drawn on their last tour in 1997.
Same team for first 3 South Africa ODIs
Nov 12, 2005
Sourav Ganguly continued to be excluded from the Indian team after the national selectors on Saturday retained the winning combination that played Sri Lanka for the first three matches against South Africa.
The 15-member squad for first three matches against South Africa: Rahul Dravid (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Sachin Tendulkar , Yuvraj Singh, Mohd. Kaif, Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, JP Yadav, Irfan Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, RP Singh, Sreesanth, Murali Kartik and Ajit Agarkar.
Dhoni makes it 6-1 for India
Nov 11, 2005
Mahendra Singh Dhoni produced another match-winning innings as India wrapped up a 6-1 one-day series win over Sri Lanka at Baroda.
Dhoni, who made an astonishing 183 not out in the third game, hit three sixes and nine fours in his 80 off 73 balls.
He was caught at long-off with just five needed for victory as India eased home on 245-5 with 10.3 overs to spare.
Russel Arnold (68) and Marvan Atapattu (59) had earlier shared a stand of 133 as Sri Lanka totalled 244-9.
It represented a good recovery after the tourists had been reduced to 85-5, but the eventual outcome was never in doubt after India made 109 off the first 14 overs of their reply. Sachin Tendulkar (39), Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan (both 35) were responsible for India's flying start.
Seventh ODI, Baroda: India 245-5 (39.3 overs) beat Sri Lanka 244-9 (50 overs) by five wickets
Yuvraj, RP Singh lift India to 7-wkt win
Nov 09, 2005
Yuvraj Singh hit an explosive unbeaten 79 as India thrashed Sri Lanka by seven wickets to take a 5-1 series lead.
Yuvraj blasted nine fours and three sixes in an unbroken century stand with Mohammed Kaif to guide India to their target of 197 with 15.1 overs to spare.
Earlier, left-arm paceman Rudra Pratap Singh took four wickets as Sri Lanka were bowled out in the 43rd over, Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scoring on 59.
Sixth ODI, Rajkot: India 197-3 bt Sri Lanka 196 allout by seven wickets
 Dilshan restores Sri Lankan pride
Nov 06, 2005
Tillakaratne Dilshan (81) and Russell Arnold (49) put on an unbroken 131 as Sri Lanka beat India by five wickets in the fifth one-dayer in Ahmedabad.
Gautam Gambhir and captain Rahul Dravid both hit 103 as India totalled 285-8, with Farveez Maharoof taking 4-20.
The tourists were struggling on 155-5 but Dilshan and Arnold kept the score ticking along before accelerating to clinch victory with 14 balls to spare.
Sri Lanka now trail 4-1 with the sixth match in Rajkot on November 9.
Fifth ODI, Ahmedabad: Sri Lanka 286-5 bt India 285-8 by five wickets
India clinch series with Pune win
Nov 03, 2005 Mahendra Dhoni and Suresh Raina put on 82 to guide India to a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Pune and a 4-0 lead in the seven-match one-day series.
Captain Marvan Atapattu hit 87 as the tourists were bowled out for 261, with seamer Ajit Agarkar claiming 5-44.
India were cruising at 176-3, thanks to 63 from skipper Rahul Dravid , but they then lost three wickets for four runs.
Dhoni (45) hit two sixes off Russel Arnold to clinch the series with three games left while Raina contributed 39.
Dravid's decision to put the Lankans in paid off when the in-form Kumar Sangakkara (8) and fellowopener Sanath Jayasuriya (16) were trapped lbw by Agarkar.
Forth ODI, Pune: India 262-6 bt Sri Lanka 261 by four wickets
 Dhoni's 183* seals India win
Oct 31, 2005 Mahendra Dhoni hit a brilliant century as India beat Sri Lanka in Jaipur to earn themselves a 3-0 stranglehold in the seven-match limited-overs series.
Wicket-keeper Dhoni allowed the hosts to chase a stiff target of 299 at a canter and he hit a national record 10 sixes in his remarkable 183 not out.
His score also matched the second highest by an Indian in one-dayers.
Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara hit 152 not out in Sri Lanka's 298-4, which also included 71 from Mahela Jayawardene.
Sri Lanka won the toss but started slowly. Sangakkara however hit two sixes and 13 fours as he blazed to a career-best score in one-day internationals. Dhoni's score was only 11 runs off the best ever in one-day internationals - Saeed Anwar's 194 for Pakistan against India in Madras in 1997.
Third one-day international, Jaipur: India 303-4 beat Sri Lanka 298-4 by six wickets
Sri Lanka crumble to Pathan swing
Oct 28, 2005 Irfan Pathan took 4-37 as India bowled out Sri Lanka for just 122 in Mohali, and they went on to win the second one-day international with ease.
Kumar Sangakkara was the highest scorer with 27 in a feeble effort from the tourists in the Mohali day-nighter.
Pathan, who found plenty of swing movement throughout, removed Sanath Jayasuriya in the first over and also dismissed three others in the top six. Sachin Tendulkar then hit 70 not out as India got home in the 21st over.
The margin of victory was a healthy eight wickets - Virender Sehwag (38) and Jai Prakash Yadav the only men to be dismissed.
Second one-day international, Mohali: India 123-2 beat Sri Lanka 122 by eight wickets
 Tendulkar shines in India victory
Oct 25, 2005 Sachin Tendulkar struck 93 in his first international match for over six months as India thrashed Sri Lanka by 152 runs in the first one-day match in Nagpur. Tendulkar, back from a long-term elbow injury, hit nine fours and two sixes. He shared a second-wicket stand of 164 with Irfan Pathan, who blasted 84 in a new role as pinch hitter. And new full-time captain Rahul Dravid hit an unbeaten 85 from 63 deliveries to lead the hosts to a mammoth 350-6. The Sri Lankans lost Marvan Atapattu second ball and by the 22nd over were in tatters at 121-7, before finally being bowled out for 198 in the 36th. Sri Lanka had Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan fit to play despite last-minute injury scares.

 What about Ganguly?
Indian coach Greg Chappell suggested before the first one dayer at Nagpur that Sourav Ganguly's removal as captain did not mark the end of the road for him and said the left hander should prove his fitness and form to get back into the national team. But the question is whether he will be able to find his form, and his way back into the Indian team or if there is a place for him again. The recent India Times poll was almost equally divided on the issue. Asked whether it was fitness or form that should be considered above the other, Chappell said "at any given time one thing weighs over the other. But it is fitness first and foremost." Chappell said he was looking forward to working with Dravid. "He is a tremendous cricketer. He has earned the honour of captaining the country," the former Australian captain said. "He has a very positive attitude and good cricketing brain. He led the side on and off the field well in Sri Lanka. Rahul Dravid is captaining the Indian side in the one-day series against Sri Lanka and South Africa. He has led India in 5 five-day test matches and 17 one-dayers before the nagpur ODI. His place in the team, as arguably the world's best batsman in all conditions, is unassailable. The one-dayers are in effect a trial. The crunch will come in late November when India names its captain for three five-day tests against Sri Lanka. If Dravid is chosen, Chappell will have won his battle, Ganguly's eventful tenure will be over, and the balance of influence across the game will move a bit further toward the coach.
Sree Santh new face; Laxman out!
Oct 14, 2005 Young Kerala fast bowler S. Sreesanth's impressive performance in the Challenger series was rewarded by the selectors on Friday. The BCCI selectors, who met in Mohali, named the 22-year-old in the 15-member squad led by Rahul Dravid for the first two ODIs of the home series against Sri Lanka. Sachin Tendulkar returns to international cricket after nearly six months while V.V.S. Laxman, despite scores of 110 and 48 in the Challengers, fails to find a spot. Mohammad Kaif, who tore his hamstring in the final of the Challengers, and Sourav Ganguly with a dodgy elbow have been left out. Along with Irfan Pathan and R.P. Singh, Sreesanth will provide Dravid the pace options while Harbhajan Singh and Murali Kartik are the specialist spinners. Venugopala Rao and Suresh Raina retain their places for the series, which begins with a match at Nagpur on October 25.
Indian Cricket Team: Rahul Dravid (capt.), Virender Sehwag , Sachin Tendulkar , Yuvraj Singh, Venugopala Rao, Suresh Raina, M.S. Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, J.P. Yadav, S. Sreesanth, Gautam Gambhir and R.P. Singh.
Vidyut helps Seniors to win Challenger
Oct 13, 2005
India Senior produced a strong performance to defeat India B by three wickets to win the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy final at the PCA Stadium in Mohali on Thursday. After bundling out India B for a modest 177, the Seniors rode on a robust knock by Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan to knock off the required runs with 11 overs to spare in the floodlit encounter.
It was sort of coming of age for Vidyut the son of former India leg-spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan who cracked 87 from 107 balls with 15 fours. The left-hander had shown more potential with the bat than with his slow left arm stuff right from his maiden appearance in a first class match.
It was in 2000-01 in a Ranji trophy knockout match against Delhi that Vidyut became the first number 11 batsman to score a century in the history of the competition.
He made 115 out of 122 balls and added 158 runs for the last wicket as Tamil Nadu batted the visitors out of the pre-quarter final.
It was not long before the youngster began to command a place in the state team purely as an opening batsman, in which he has scored two hundreds and nine 50s. The 23-year-old showed the same penchant for big shots on Thursday. Vidyut showed good balance when handling the pacers, complimenting it with neat footwork when playing the spinners.
Vidyut and Sachin provided the seniors with an explosive start with a 46-run stand before the latter failed to spot a googly from leg spinner Chawla that knocked his leg stump.Sachins brief stay at the crease showed signs of his class as he hit a few rasping shots which was enough to send the few hundreds of fans into a frenzy.
The summit clash turned out to be a damp squib with India B falling flat with a dismal performance that came on the heels of a stunning victory over India A on Wednesday.
Dravid named as captain
Oct 12, 2005
The selectors have appointed Rahul Dravid as the captain of the Indian side for the two forthcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka and South Africa, a total of 12 ODIs starting on October 25. Dravid was put in charge of the side until November 28, when India will play South Africa in the final match of the five-match series at Mumbai.
The selectors' future plans are unknown and one can only speculate if this is another stop-gap arrangement where Dravid will be filling in for Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly, who was advised to rest his elbow till October 17, may not find a place in the squad for the opening two games of the series. His performance in East Zone's opening Duleep Trophy match, beginning on October 20, might hence be vital for his return for the rest of the one-day series.

Super test day 4: Australia thrash World XIOctober 17, 2005 Australia's spinners ripped through the World XI to record a convincing 210-run victory on day four of the Super Series Test in Sydney.
Stuart MacGill took four wickets on Monday and Shane Warne three as the World XI were all out for 144.
Resuming on 25-2, the World XI lost Rahul Dravid (23), Brian Lara (36) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (0) before lunch.
And with the exception of Jacques Kallis, who was unbeaten on 39, the rest of the batsmen surrendered meekly.
MacGill ended with figures of 5-43 off 15 overs and Warne took 3-48 off 19. Man-of-the-match: Matthew Hayden
Super test day 3: Test set for exciting endOctober 16, 2005 The World XI bowlers hit back on day three of the six-day Super Test, dismissing Australia for 199 in Sydney. But set an imposing 355 to win, the World XI made a shaky start in their second innings, slumping to 25-2 when bad light stopped play early.
Australia lost their last nine wickets for just 47 runs, their worst batting collapse on home soil for 117 years, Matthew Hayden top-scoring with 77.
Super test day 2: Australia on top against World XI October 15, 2005 Australia have a commanding lead in the six-day Super Test after bowling out the World XI for 190 in Sydney. Leg-spinners Stuart MacGill and Shane Warne did the damage for the home side, claiming seven wickets between them. By the close of play on day two, Australia had advanced to 66-1, a lead of 221 runs, with Jacques Kallis dismissing Justin Langer for 22.
Lee had World skipper Graeme Smith caught behind for 12, while McGrath removed Rahul Dravid and Brian Lara.
Dravid was caught by wicket-keeper Gilchrist for a duck while Lara was lbw for five. India's Virender Sehwag and South African Kallis steadied the World XI ship after lunch until Sehwag holed out to Simon Katich off Warne after making 76. Inzamam-ul-Haq was out for one in the following over, stumped by Gilchrist off MacGill.
Super test day 1: Gilchrist aims for Super centuryOctober 14, 2005 Australia were 331-6 when bad light ended play on day one, with Gilchrist 94 not out and Shane Warne on one. Vice-captain Gilchrist hit four sixes and eight fours in his 109-ball innings after opener Matthew Hayden made 111.
World skipper Graeme Smith hopes they can restrict Australia to under 400 and then establish a first innings lead.
"If we can defend 400 and hopefully bat well, then that's a good position in the game and we can really attack in the second innings.
Shoaib dropped from World XI teamOctober 13, 2005 Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar was on Thursday dropped from the World XI team for the Super Test against Australia starting at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday. World XI skipper Graeme Smith, said Shoaib, who was a big disappointment in last week's 3-0 loss to Australia in the one-day Super Series in Melbourne, had been omitted from the 12 member team.
Shoaib, regarded as the fastest bowler, performed below his best conceding 110 runs from 17 overs taking just one wicket in the first two ODI's and did not play the third game. The final World XI team will be chosen before the start of play on Thursday in the one-off six-day Test.
ODI 3: World XI collapse to third defeat October 7, 2005 The ICC World XI crashed to another defeat at Melbourne's Telstra Dome as Australia cruised to a 3-0 win in the World Series one-day tournament. With just the Test match in Sydney to come, Australia look to be back in form after their Ashes disappointment.
Brett Lee had a tremendous evening, taking 4-30, after Michael Hussey and Shane Watson had taken the Aussies to another formidable score, 293-5.
The World XI were bowled out for 137, Virender Sehwag making 37.
ODI 2: Gilchrist blitz seals seriesOctober 7, 2005 Adam Gilchrist hit the fastest ever century by an Australian to help the home side beat the World XI by 55 runs and win the one-day Super Series. Gilchrist made his ton from just 73 balls as Australia set the opposition a target of 329 after making 328-4. The batsman-keeper got good support from captain Ricky Ponting (66), Damien Martyn (54) and Simon Katich (47).
Chris Gayle and Kumar Sangakkara made half-centuries and Andrew Flintoff made 42 in reply but it proved not enough.
ODI 1: Australia outplay World all-starsOctober 5, 2005 Australia exploded the myth of their decline as cricket's super power with a convincing 93-run victory over a star-studded World XI in the opening One-Day International of the ICC Johnnie Walker Super Series in Melbourne. The three-time World Champions produced a solid batting display to put up a challenging 255 for eight, and then followed it up with an immaculate bowling performance to dismiss the World XI for 163 with more than eight overs to spare. The World XI were reduced to smithereens by the blistering force of the Aussies as only two of the specialists in the star-studded line up managed to reach double figures. India's swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid found themselves undone by the searing pace and steep bounce of the track at the roofed Telstra Dome stadium. Only Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara (64) and England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff (38) managed to emerge unscathed.
Super Series warm-up matchOctober 2, 2005 The World XI warmed up for the Super Series against Australia by squeaking home with a 12-run win over Victoria.
India's Rahul Dravid top-scored with 66 as the World XI scored 281-8 at the Junction Oval in St Kilda.
ICC Champion Australia take on Rest of the World February 2, 2005 The International Cricket Council (ICC)'s inaugural ICC Super Series between the ICC World XI team and Australia in October will be the first time when an official #1 world team will take on the rest of the world.
The ICC Super Series will see Australia as the number one ranked team in international cricket take on a team of the best players from all other countries in a three-match, one-day series on October 5, 7 and 9 at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne, and a one-off, six-day Super Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from October 14-19.

Pakistan shames India in ODIs Final with victory of 159 Runs
April 17, 2005
Setting yet another magnificent chapter in the history of Cricket
in Pakistan, the zestful skipper Inzamam ul Haq and his men gained
an exquisite victory overthrowing India, clutching a significant
margin of 159 runs at Feroz Shah Kotla in last One-dayer as well
as in six matches ODI series by 4-2 after facing deficit of two
matches.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first on Sunday morning,
which was proved to be right as Pakistani openers played well,
especially, Shahid Afridi once again gave a marvelous performance,
blazing 44 runs knock on 23 balls. Even after dismissal of Afridi,
Pakistani batsmen batted with responsibility putting massive total
of 304 runs on scoreboard for India. In reply, Indian team only
managed to score only 144 runs in 27 overs.
It was a disappointing end to John Wright's five-year stint as
India coach as his players failed to rise to the occasion in his
farewell match. The fixture was watched for more than an hour
in the morning by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Indian
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Rana Naveedul Hassan was proclaimed as Man of the Series for gripping
15 wickets in the ODI series.
