Commonwealth Bank Series, 2012

India, Sri Lanka, Australia - Commonwealth Bank Series

The Australian Tri-Series (also known as the World Series Cup between 1979–80 and 1995–96) is a one day international cricket tournament held between the home side and two touring teams, in the height of the Australian cricket season, i.e. during the summer months of December, January and February. The concept of a three-team international series (known as a tri-series) in cricket originated with the World Series Cricket program sponsored by Kerry Packer, and the first two tri-series between Australia, West Indies and a World XI have never been awarded official One Day International status.

Australian Tri-Series: India vs Sri Lanka

India edge Sri Lanka by 4 wickets

[pts: Aus 5, Ind 4, Srl 0]
Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin played sensibly to take India to a four wickets victory over Sri lanka after India lost skipper Dhoni and Suresh Raina in quick succession in the 2nd ODI at the WACA ground in Perth. Set 234 to win after restricting Sri Lanka to 8-233 off 50 overs, Virat Kohli top-scored with 77, and India reached the score with 20 balls to spare due to the unbeaten 53-run stand for the seventh wicket by Jadeja and Ashwin.

Asked to field first, Ravichandran Ashwin (3-32) and Zaheer Khan (2-44) led a fine bowling display by India. Dinesh Chandimal was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with a steady 81-ball 64.

Match 4, Adelaide Oval

Dhoni, Gambhir help India claim thrilling win over Australia

[pts: Aus 9, Ind 8, Srl 0]
Chasing 270, and with 12 runs needed off four balls, Dhoni struck the first boundary in his 58-ball innings - a massive 112-meter six over long on - and scored the rest in a highly entertaining fashion to script India's first victory over Australia in the tournament. Earlier, Gautam Gambhir's 92 and partnerships with Virender Sehwag (20) and Rohit Sharma (33), put India on course for a comfortable victory, but later India struggled, losing wickets and momentum in the process.

Australia team: Warner, Ponting, Clarke, Forrest, D Hussey, Christian, Wade, Harris, Starc, McKay, Doherty

India team: V Sehwag, G Gambhir, V Kohli, S Raina, R Sharma, MS Dhoni, R Jadeja, R Ashwin, R Vinay Kumar, Z Khan, U Yadav

Match 5, Adelaide Oval

Dhoni, Gambhir help India tie match this time, against Sri Lanka

‎[pts: Ind 10, Aus 9, Srl 2]
The fifth One Day International of the Tri-series between India and Sri Lanka ended in a tie, after Man of the Match MS Dhoni (58) helped produce another Houdini-like escape. Chasing 237, Gautam Gambhir top scored again - with a 91 this time - while Dhoni was again India's hero in the last over of the match, just like two days ago against Australia. Dhoni failed to hit a winning boundary off the last ball by Lasith, but was able to push Yadav to complete three runs after hitting the ball over the covers, needing four off the last ball.
Australian Tri-Series ODI cricket match 5 - Sri Lanka 236/9 in 50 ov (Chandimal 81, Jayawardene 43, Vinay 3-46) tied with India 236/9 in 50 ov (Gambhir 91, Dhoni 58*)

Australian Tri-Series: Australia vs Sri Lanka

Match 6, WACA, Perth

Sri Lanka win rain curtailed match by 8 wickets

‎ ‎[pts: Ind 10, Aus 9, Srl 7]
Sri Lanka excelled with the ball and in the field to register a remarkable victory in Sydney, and recorded their first win in the Tri-series‎. Chasing a revised target of 152 for a win under the Duckworth-Lewis method, Jayawardene (61 not out) anchored the run chase after opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (45) and Kumar Sangakkara (30) laid the foundation for an easy win at the SCG.

Earlier, David Hussey's half-century lifted Australia to 158 off 40.5, the hosts' lowest completed one-day international score at the SCG since 1997. With the absence of Australian skipper Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting was put in charge of the side, but Australia's fortunes again mirrored those of its captain, who made just 2.
Australian Tri-Series ODI cricket match 6 - Sri Lanka 152/2 in 24.1 ov (Jayawardene 61*, Dilshan 45) beat Australia 158 in 40.5/41 ov (David Hussey 58) by eight wickets according to D-L method

Australian Tri-Series: Australia vs India

Match 7, Brisbane

Australia thrashes India at Brisbane

‎[pts: Aus 14, Ind 10, Srl 7]
Chasing Australia's mammoth 288/5, India's batting failed miserably as they slumped to a massive 110-run defeat in Gabba. Captain Dhoni who top scored for India delayed the inevitable with a patient 56. However, he was banned for one match due to India's slow over-rate. It's the second time on this tour that Dhoni has been suspended for a breach of the over-rates regulations.

Australia team: David Warner, Matthew Wade, Ricky Ponting, Peter Forrest, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Daniel Christian, Brett Lee, Mitchell Starc, Xavier Doherty, Ben Hilfenhaus.

India team: Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, R Vinay Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav
Australian Tri-Series ODI cricket match 7 - Australia 288/5 in 50 ov (M Hussey 59, Forrest 52) beat India 178 all out in 43.3 overs (Dhoni 56, Hilfenhaus 5-33) by 110 runs

Australian Tri-Series: India vs Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka trounce India by 51 runs

‎[pts: Aus 14, Srl 11, Ind 10]
Nuwan Kulasekara claimed three wickets - dismissing Tendulkar, Gambhir and Jadeja - and two important catches as Sri Lanka beat India by 51 runs Tuesday to replace the World Cup champions in second spot in the Tri-series. Perera (4 for 37) and Kulasekera (3 for 40) outshone usual bowling star Lasith Malinga, after Sri Lanka scored 289 for six, batting first. MS Dhoni, Zaheer Khan and Rohit Sharma sat out, while Sehwag, Parthiv Patel and R Ashwin played for India.

India were bowled out for 238 in 45.1 overs. Virat Kohli top-scored with 66 for India and shared a 92-run fourth-wicket stand with Suresh Raina. Irfan Pathan (47 off 34 balls) smashed seven boundaries, before he was the last man to fall, dismissed by a fine return catch from Perera.

Sri Lanka team: Dilshan, Jayawardene (Capt), Sangakkara (Wkt), Chandimal, Thirimanne, Mathews, Perera, Maharoof, Kulasekara, Malinga, Herath

India team: Sehwag (Capt), Tendulkar, Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Patel (Wkt), Jadeja, Pathan, Ashwin, Vinay Kumar, Yadav
